The Growing Series

The machinery of growing food: how a plant feeds itself, what soil actually is, how a decision to irrigate gets made, and how a new variety comes into existence. The physical layer under every supply chain. Part of Under the Hood.

How Does a Plant Feed Itself?

The carbon in a tree came out of the air, not the soil. To take that carbon in, a plant has to open pores that lose water, so fixing carbon and losing water are the same act, which is why growth in most of Australia is limited by water rather than by sunlight. How water gets to the top of a tall tree with no pump anywhere in the system.
