The Trades Series

The rules behind the work that holds a building together: the earth path and what an RCD detects that a fuse cannot, how a trap and a vent keep sewer gas out of a house, how a slab is poured, cured and reinforced, and what a building inspection checks and explicitly does not. Part of Under the Hood.

How Is a House Wired?

House wiring assumes the fault will happen and is designed to make it survivable. A circuit breaker protects the cable from a current big enough to melt it. A residual current device is looking for something else entirely: a difference between what goes out the active and what comes back in the neutral, because that difference means the current found another way home, and the likeliest other way is a person. The earth path, and why a fuse was never going to save anybody.
